Why This Practice Exists
Federal workers are an underserved population when it comes to mental health care. The people who deliver our mail, process it, and keep the postal system running are asked to absorb a lot — and when the job itself causes real psychological harm, finding a provider who actually understands the federal workers' compensation system can feel impossible.
Dr. Currin founded this practice after fielding call after call from injured federal workers who had been searching, and searching, for a provider who accepted OWCP — and kept coming up empty. That pattern of good, hardworking people falling through the cracks of a system that should have been there for them is what led him to focus his practice specifically on this population.

Meet Dr. Currin
James Currin, PhD, is a licensed psychologist with over two decades of experience in psychological assessment and rehabilitation psychology. He founded Independence Behavioral Health in 2002 and has spent his career working at the intersection of physical injury, chronic illness, and mental health — evaluating and treating patients navigating pain management, presurgical assessment, adjustment difficulties, and trauma across a range of multidisciplinary medical settings.
Dr. Currin holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Texas, with a research focus on adult and geriatric mental health, and has published in peer-reviewed journals including Psychotherapy. He has spent his career providing consultation and supervision across multidisciplinary healthcare teams, working alongside physicians, rehabilitation specialists, and fellow mental health providers.
